Property Tax Discounts for Disabled Vets
Texas property taxes are high, but VA-rated disabled vets (DVs) may receive a discount on the taxes property taxes. Some DVs can even get their property taxes completely waived.
Here’s the breakdown:
1, VA Rated Disability
You must be rated by the Veterans Administration (VA) as a Disabled Veteran (DV) to take advantage of these Texas Tax benefits.

2, Property Tax Exemption - Breakdown per DV rating
10% - 29% = $5,000
30% - 49% = $7,500
50% - 69% = $10,000
70% - 99% = $12,000
100% P&T / TDIU = Exempted from ALL property tax

3, Property Tax Exemption - Additional Breakdown
You qualify for a $12,000 tax exemption if you meet the following criteria:
Veterans who are 65 or older, and
at least VA10% rated,
blind
paraplegic
loss of limb
You qualify for a $5,000 tax exemption if you meet the following criteria:
Surviving Spouse of a veteran with a DV rating
Child of a veteran with a DV rating
How apply for these exemptions?
It’s easy to file your exemption with HCAD (Harris Central Appraisal District). Follow the direct form links and you can fill out the E-Form directly and file on the spot. However, you need to use different forms for different VA Disability ratings:
